Common AS400 Trucking, TMS and Logistics Questions

AS400 Trucking, TMS and Logistics Overview

AS400 trucking software is not a museum exhibit. It is a live product category with named vendors and real installed bases. Trimble sells TL2000, carrier dispatch and operations software built on the IBM System i, and it also owns the Innovative Computing line that Access Plus came out of, picked up in 2009 along with roughly 300 IBM i customers. Trimble has offered subscription versions of Innovative Access, Access Plus and TL2000, so a perpetual license signed decades ago is not the only commercial shape available. TMT Fleet Maintenance covers work orders, technician time, preventive maintenance, parts inventory and warranty recovery, and has IBM i lineage even though Trimble now leads with a cloud edition. Varsity Logistics builds ShipSoft Parcel and ShipSoft Freight, a multi-carrier parcel, LTL, truckload and rail rating stack the vendor describes as built for the IBM i. AR Traffic Consultants sells a freight rating, routing, bid analysis, bill of lading and audit suite on IBM i that integrates with BPCS, MAPICS-XA, PRMS and ERP-LX.

Buyers here are almost never starting from nothing. Most already run dispatch, rating, fleet maintenance or multi-carrier shipping on the box, and the real question is narrower: modernize what exists, add one missing capability such as multi-carrier rating or mobile driver workflows, or replace a single module without touching the rest. The rating engine is usually where a replacement project stalls. It is correct, it is undocumented, and nobody wants to be the one who breaks it.

AS400 Trucking, TMS and Logistics Features to Evaluate

  • Native IBM i integration depth for dispatch, rating and settlement transactions, not a screen-scraped layer sitting on top of a 5250 session
  • Multi-carrier and multi-modal rating coverage if the operation moves parcel, LTL, truckload or rail freight through more than one carrier
  • Whether fleet and asset maintenance is the same system as dispatch or a second product that shares data, because vendors answer this differently
  • Driver-facing mobile workflows, including proof of delivery and bill of lading capture at pickup and delivery
  • Transportation EDI coverage for the transaction sets shippers and brokers actually send: 204 load tender, 990 tender response, 214 shipment status and 210 freight invoice
  • Freight audit and bid analysis, since overcharge recovery is often the only part of a transportation project with a measurable payback

AS400 Trucking, TMS and Logistics Implementation Considerations

Dispatch and rating logic tends to be the least documented, highest risk part of a carrier's IBM i codebase, often written and revised by people who left the company years ago. Scope any modernization or replacement project around understanding that logic first, not around a target go-live date. A phased approach that starts with a lower risk edge capability, such as mobile proof of delivery capture or automated document extraction, before anyone touches the dispatch or rating core, reduces the chance of an outage that stops trucks from being dispatched.

The second constraint is the ERP already on the box. If order, inventory and invoice transactions live in BPCS, MAPICS-XA, PRMS or ERP-LX, the shortlist narrows fast to products that have integrated with those systems before. Ask for named reference accounts running the same ERP and the same IBM i release, and confirm which deployment the vendor is actually selling and supporting for new customers today rather than assuming the version in an old brochure is still current.
