RTO

Recovery Time Objective ... the target amount of time a business can tolerate before a system is restored.

Definition

RTO is the time-based recovery target that shapes continuity design. In IBM i software planning, RTO influences whether backup, HA, DR, or managed operations investments are sufficient.

A short RTO usually increases pressure for stronger automation, replication, testing, and partner involvement.

Example

If a warehouse operation can only tolerate two hours of downtime, its RTO is far more demanding than a back-office process that can wait until the next day.
