Multi-Factor Authentication

An authentication approach that requires more than one proof of identity before access is granted.

Definition

Multi-factor authentication, often shortened to MFA, adds a second or third proof of identity beyond a password. In IBM i environments, MFA projects usually focus on interactive user access, remote administration, or privileged login pathways where password-only access is no longer acceptable.

The best IBM i MFA evaluation includes operational fit as well as control strength.

Example

An administrator might need a password plus a mobile push approval before signing into an IBM i management session.
